Images of Oxford - Christ Church
Images of Christ Church, a college of the University of Oxford, appear on our Colombian coffee and
Peruvian coffee packets.
As well as being one of the largest colleges at the University, unusually the chapel at Christ Church is
also the cathedral of the Diocese of Oxford. The cathedral was originally the church of
St. Frideswide's Priory, which was surrendered to to Cardinal Wolsey in 1522. The Cardinal founded
Cardinal College on its lands, which in turn was refounded by Henry VIII in 1532 as King Henry VIII's College.
Henry later re-organised the Church of England and re-founded the college as Christ Church, bestowing
upon the chapel its cathedral status.
Having produced 13 British Prime Ministers, the college is well known and has featured heavily on film, most
recently in the Harry Potter series of films and The Golden Compass, written by Oxford author Philip Pulman.
Pictured on the Colombian coffee is the Meadow Building, built in 1863 and designed by Sir Thomas Deane. The
Meadow Building looks out across Christ Church Meadow, a meadow open to the public which stretches down
to the River Isis and River Cherwell. The view on the Peruvian coffee is of the college from the top of Carfax tower
in Oxford city centre.
