Images of Oxford - Bridge of Sighs
The "Bridge of Sighs" is a landmark in the centre of Oxford, lining the Old and New Quadrangles of
Hertford College. An image of the bridge appears on our English Breakfast tea packets.
More properly known as "Hertford Bridge", the bridge gained its better known nickname due to its
passing resemblence of the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice.
Despite attempts to prevent it being built by other Oxford colleges, the bridge designed by
leading architect Sir Thomas Graham Jackson was completed in 1914. Jackson, a former student of Oxford
University, was responsible for the design of many college buildings in and around Oxford, including the
well know Examination Schools building.
